The works of Bryan Lubeck just seem to get better and better, and his fourth album,
Tuscan Sky, is proof. Bryan learned early on to wrap himself around some very talented musicians, and this time around, everything absolutely clicks. Produced by Lubeck and Marc Nelson,
Tuscan Sky’s smooth grooves begin instantly, as track #1, "All Summer Long", has one looking for a pair of sunglasses and a great glass of wine. We’re not talking about music that will lull someone to sleep, we are talking about music that lifts you to a different destination, with just the right amount of Spanish guitar and urban funk.
Pete Gitlin’s electric rhythm guitar is evident on the track "Sidney’s Way," which opens the Tuscan windows in a different direction, with a different sound. "Sidney’s Way," a tribute to Lubeck’s eldest daughter, will soon be released as a single, as well as a video. Although co-written by Gitlin, this track is the very soul of Lubeck. I found myself putting this track on repeat play, until my wife informed me that there were nine more tracks. Each new track brings more and more interest to the cd. The track "Gypsy Groove" brings out the more funky side of Lubeck, and his Spanish guitar, yet still keeps one in focus that the glass of wine is tasting pretty darned good.
The tracks "On Her Own" and "On His Own", were written and recorded to run hand in hand. The more gentle, "On Her Own," brings in the grand piano, to play the more feminine side. "On His Own," sees a more bold and aggressive side. Lubeck describes the songs as two people, on their own, searching for one another.
The last track, "Raining Through The Trees," was written by Lubeck when he was in college. The original version can be heard on his first cd Mysterious Woman, with Lubeck doing the vocals. This time, the song was updated through a collaboration with Grammy winner, Jim Peterik. The incredible voice of Lisa McClowry, along with a new arrangement done by Peterik, bring new depth to the song, and finishes the cd in a most beautiful way. The new version was written and produced by Lubeck, Peterik and McClowry.
There are a number of musicians who have made contributions in making this cd a true “must have.” One person missing is keyboardist Dave Maki, who was on most of Lubeck’s recordings. A true genius of music, Maki lost his battle with lung cancer several months ago. A special acknowledgement is noted by Lubeck on the inside jacket cover.
Tuscan Sky is a beautifully done cd, with all the right touches of Lubeck’s signature flamenco style. The recording is crystal clear, and finished in classic Lubeck style.
