André Berry
is a very talented bass player who has played with some of
the best known artists of smooth jazz, including Dave Koz,
Mindi Abair, two of the Guitars and Saxes tours and the Dave
Koz & Friends at Sea Cruise as well
as other Smooth Jazz cruises. The list of artists André has
played with is long and impressive, as you can see by his
Bio/Resume on his website www.andreberry.com. You
can listen to his new CD on his website, but you will want
to own copies for both your car and home. If you’ve
seen André play live, you know the man can play! You’ll
find the same energy and spirit on this freshman CD.
This self-produced CD, Gratitude,
is André’s first solo CD, and I’m hearing
nothing but good things from everyone I talk to. It
contains all original material either written or co-written
by André. It’s a fun ride from the first
song to the last. Starting off with the song “Breathe,” which
is reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s sound, André shows
off his talent and funky flair on the bass. Anyone
who has seen André on stage knows he’s a funky
dude, which he makes apparent when he holds his bass upside
down to reveal the word FUNK written on the back of his bass. The
second track, “Touch,” is not only a wonderful
example of André’s talent on the bass, but his
sexy, soulful voice is laden throughout the song. The
electronic sounding third track, “Follow the Signs,” will
have you bopping your head and shimmying your shoulders to
the amazing beat of this song. This is definitely one
of the best tracks of the CD. The tender title track, “Gratitude,” includes
the easily recognizable, melodious voice of Steve Oliver,
as well as Steve’s talent on lead guitar. André’s
incredible talent is evident on this enchanting song. “Somebody
to Love” is next with beautiful, breathy vocals by
Lori Perry, and it also includes Chris Standring on guitar. It’s
sexy, sweet and fresh.
My personal favorite track is “Jus’ Feel It.” There’s
a very strong bass line here and with the duo of Randy Jacobs’ guitar
and the sweet soprano saxophone of Jeff Gonzales, it has
a great feel from beginning to end. The peppy “Shake
it Loose,” with a strong performance by Mitch Forman
on keys, reminds me of sitcom soundtracks from the late 70s,
early 80s. I couldn’t help but think of the Huxtable’s
dancing during the intro of The Cosby Show. “The
Lovewave,” with Andy Cleaves on trumpet, is yet another
display of André’s superior talent on the bass. The
final tune, “Victory Blvd,” is a light, airy
tune with a good feel to it.
This is definitely a “Victory” for André. He
is a talented musician with style and personality that holds
its own among other bass players. Gratitude is
a refreshing example of André’s talent and shows
that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Smooth Jazz
world.
