If you are looking for that pure Boney James sound, for something purely his own production, then you need to listen to Boney James’ latest release, Pure, on the Warner Bros. label. Moving somewhat away from his usual smooth jazz sound, Boney takes on a true R&B persona, in addition to this being his production debut.
The title track opens the cd and sets the mood for the whole experience. It’s purely Boney’s groove, with the great R&B beat. This is a great track for the romantic night. “Better With Time,” featuring Bilal on vocals is a very sexy song, and Boney’s background sax leads the way. There are two other vocals on this cd, “Appreciate” featuring Debi Nova, and “Break of Dawn” with Dwele. Each of these showcases a quality performance by Boney, while adding a new flavor and possibly a new audience by crossing over to vocal R&B. But there are many instrumentals to satisfy the pure Boney fan.
The most danceable track, and pure Boney sound is on “Stone Groove” featuring the legendary Joe Sample. This tune just exudes everything loved about Boney James and his sound. Joe Sample’s piano is classic and moving. The first single “Here She Comes” is an up-tempo track that is sure to get lots of airplay. “It’s On” is another groovin’ tune that makes you want to crank up the volume. “2:01 AM” and “You Don’t Have to Go Home” are two very sultry, soulful tunes that shows the emotion of Boney James. His style, soul, and all-around funkiness are evident throughout this cd.
Boney has shown his versatility as a musician, writer and producer, on this, his ninth cd. This truly is Pure Boney James, with something for everyone.
