Every
so often you come across a superb indie CD – a
needle in the haystack of CDs submitted that has that something that
makes it stand out from the crowd. This time it was Turn
on the Charm from saxophonist, Keith Jacobson,
who moves effortlessly between the soprano, alto and tenor
saxes. This CD is a great blend of funky grooves, catchy
hooks, and just a lot of showcased talent. There are
ten tracks with one cover. Most of the musicians are
relatively unknown, except for Patrick Yandall, who adds
his terrific electric guitar on two of the tunes.
The CD opens
with “Get Up,” a totally funky,
on-your-feet tune. This definitely kick starts the
CD. Keith just explodes on the alto and tenor. “Zip
in My Zap” is a catchy little tune that has feet tapping
and heads bopping. It is totally beat driven but the
focus is completely on the alto sax aided by Patrick Yandall’s
guitar blending beautifully with the groove, and puts the
spark into this track with a nice solo. Next up is “Inside
Touch,” featuring Keith on the soprano, alto and tenor
saxes. This gives a totally rockin’ horn section!
“Rendezvous” slows
the pace just slightly, but offers a really sweet melody
framed by some wonderful keyboards. Keith
really puts his emotion into this soprano sax tune and keep
you interested throughout. The title track, “Turn
on the Charm” is another heavy beat song, with a fun,
catchy hook. The alto and tenor saxes offer a little
heavier sound that fits in well with the entire CD. “On
the Way” is another track that showcases Keith’s
talents on all three saxes, giving that horn section feel. It’s
funky with a catchy melody and a totally rocked out guitar
solo. Taking things to a peaceful place, Keith handles
the cover of Billy Joel’s “She’s Got A
Way” with finesse and style. Keith’s tenor
sax just shines throughout as he makes it sound fresh and
hot. Continuing with a subtle but very sweet sound
is “Jasmine.” On the soprano sax, Keith
really expresses himself and this is no exception. His
emotions again come through alongside the gentle nylon string
guitar. Perfect harmony.
“Spur of the Moment” is
probably one of the catchiest tunes on the CD. It’s
just upbeat and fun. And finally, “Too Much Fun,” again
featuring Patrick Yandall on electric guitar and Keith on
the alto sax, gives a downtown, urban kind of groove. The
beat is infectious and you can’t sit still. The
bass solo is one that will leave you breathless.
Overall,
this CD is definitely a standout. If you
are into funky grooves and a not-so-smooth smooth jazz CD,
be sure to pick this up. It may be one of this year’s
sleepers, but definitely not sleepy. Keith Jacobson
will be someone to keep an eye on. You will definitely
enjoy “Turn on the Charm.”
