Nick Colionne
and
Steve Cole

Charlotte, NC

by Harvey Cline
It was another great night of smooth jazz in the queen city as guitarist Nick Colionne decked from head to toe in his beautiful lavender suit and hat along with saxophonist Steve Cole hit the stage. Backed by local musicians the two went through a fast paced set list that would make your head spin. It was to have been an evening that included saxophonist Richard Elliot, Steve was able to fill in at the last minute due to an illness.

Nick came out with his screaming guitar and his famous “Godfather” theme and “Sharp Dressed Man” which went over well with the patrons. “Some Funky” got them all going as he was all over the stage. This one featured him and Cole on the chorus as Nick finished it off out front with some great acoustic guitar. Steve was then featured his hits “Curtis” and “Natural Thang.” The first one being so much more intense than the second as the True hit showed its Quincy Jones inspiration and a lot of interplay between Nick and Steve.

Nick was then featured on his hits “High Flyin’” and “Meltin Into You.” The slow pace on this one was a lot of fun and was a lead in to his hit “Hurry Up This Way.”  The two of them added some Christmas spice with “Merry Christmas Blues” that featured Nick on vocals and Steve on some heavy sax. After a long piano solo and some great guitar from Nick, he sang about “too many dirty dishes…..” which had the crowd rolling. He went into the crowd and had lots of fun with them all. Steve then whipped off some hits as well including “When I Think of You” and “Bounce.”  They finished the evening together with a crowd standing encore that featured the talented band and of course, Nicks tribute to James Brown.

This was the final show of the concert series in Charlotte, and it went out with a bang. The crowd left knowing they got their money’s worth, and were looking forward to the next show.
