Recently, I blogged on the SmoothViews’ “Worth A Listen” page about the latest CD release, River Maiden, from pianist/keyboardist, Dan Reynolds.  Definitely a CD you should consider adding to your collection.  Now I had the chance to hear it live at Blues Alley for the CD release party…and I am so glad I did!

Joining Dan on the ever-so-cozy stage was Marshall Keys (alto and soprano saxes), Gary Grainger (bass), Mark Prince (drums), Dan Leonard (guitar), Matvei Sigalov (guitar and violin), and Roberto Santos (percussion).  This was truly an outstanding band, many of whom have played with Dan for years.

Starting things off was “A Sun for Sorrow,” which got things going for the intimate crowd.  “Optimistic Charles” followed, which was a total bluesy tune that morphed into upbeat funk.  Next up were three songs from the latest CD, River Maiden.  “Last Chance,” “Summer Rain,” and the title track “River Maiden” were played with such feeling and had a fantastic dueling guitar section going on during “River Maiden.”

All throughout the set, Dan was interacting with the audience, which included a lot of friends and family.  It was terrific to hear stories of how he and several of the musicians in his band have played together for years, and how his very own river maiden inspired this CD.  (The story of how he pulled her from a Montana River have yet to be substantiated!)  Guest vocalist, Dawn Robinson, joined the stage to lend her talents on “With My Friends,” which she and Dan wrote together and showcased a great bass solo from Gary Grainger

“Lady Cloud” was a terrific blend of piano and soprano sax from Marshall Keys.  The sax took over the melody halfway through and sounded terrific.  “Big Sky” featured Matvei Sigalov on violin.  It brought a totally new and fresh sound to the music especially when playing side-by-side with the sax.  Closing the night was “The Answer” from Dan’s 2000 release, To Be Sure. It was a beautiful way to end a wonderful evening.

Dan Reynolds has stayed under the radar in the mid-Atlantic, but not for long.  This new CD is already getting the attention of other publications and listeners.  Hopefully Dan will make it out your way for you to experience a wonderful night of music as I did.
