To promote his new album, Spin, Steve Cole has hit the road. He took the Birchmere stage to tremendous applause and adulations. We came that night to hear the new material played live, and listen to some earlier favorites. Steve obliged, and began his set with his current hit single, “Thursday.” His passionate playing filled the music hall causing feet to tap, hands to clap, and heads to bop. He continued with “The Real Me,” and a different version of “Say It Again.” It featured great solo work by talented keyboardist Mike Ricchiuti. This version was long and extended. Steve took his time, simmering every note like a chef simmers a pot on a stove, slowly heating up the song until it reached a slow boil.

Then, it was time to get funky. He went to his NY/LA CD and played “Everyday” and “Off Broadway.” Steve revealed to the audience that he's been married for quite some time, and over the years had never written a song for his wife, (of which she reminded him). To redeem himself, he wrote “Letter to Laura,” and treated the audience to this musical love letter to his wife. It's a lovely heartfelt ballad and we were happy he chose to include it in the live show.

Much to the satisfaction of the woman seated behind me, Steve played his very first single from his very first album, “When I Think of You,” from Stay Awhile. The crowd enthusiastically clapped along while dancing in their seats. Steve described the next song, “Simple Things” as a soulful country tune, written by his friend and bass player, David Hiltebrand. This song featured some very nice country style guitar work by Dale Prasco.

Steve nearly brought the house down with a commanding version of “Our Love,” and ended his set with the title song, “Spin.” It was a great end to a wonderful show, but the crowd was not yet ready to send Steve away. He came back onstage for his encore performance, “Got It Goin' On” from Between Us. The drummer, Clyde Davis showed us he could really jam with a powerful yet playful drum solo. Not to be left out, Dave Hiltebrand joined in the fun and it turned into a rhythm section duo.

Steve is very talented and we love experiencing him in an intimate venue like the Birchmere. At one point, he left the stage, playing his sax as he wandered in between tables. He even had a seat at one table while still playing! If you are lucky enough to catch Steve Cole when the tour comes to your town, you'll have a night of great music, and wonderful entertainment. Don't miss out on a great show!
